The Government of Chhattisgarh, through the Law and Legislative Affairs Department, has notified the Chhattisgarh Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) (Amendment) Act, 2025 as Chhattisgarh Act No. 11 of 2026 vide Notification Kramank 1311/D.85/21 A/Praru./C.G./26, published in the Chhattisgarh Rajpatra (Extraordinary) No. 367 dated 8 July 2026. The amendment came into force on 8 July 2026, following the Governor's assent on 27 December 2025 and the President's assent on 29 June 2026. The amendment introduces significant reforms to the Chhattisgarh Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017, including increasing the applicability threshold from 10 to 20 workers, permitting women to work night shifts between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM subject to prescribed safeguards, increasing the maximum daily working hours from 9 to 10 hours, extending the continuous working period before a rest interval from 5 to 6 hours, increasing the spread-over of the working day from 10.5 to 12 hours, and enhancing the quarterly overtime limit from 125 to 144 hours. The amendment also removes provisions relating to relaxation for urgent work and separate spread-over provisions for intermittent or urgent work. Employers, HR professionals, compliance officers, and establishments operating in Chhattisgarh should review the amended provisions to ensure timely compliance with the revised statutory requirements.
