The National Commission for Women (NCW), through its advisory dated 19 June 2026, has directed all States and Union Territories to strengthen the implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act). The advisory calls for stricter compliance measures across government offices, private establishments, and informal workplaces to ensure a safe and inclusive working environment for women. Key recommendations include conducting annual POSH compliance audits for establishments employing 10 or more workers, constituting Internal Committees at every office location with the prescribed composition, strengthening the role of District Officers and Local Committees in protecting women in the informal sector, prominently displaying complaint procedures and emergency contact details, ensuring timely and confidential handling of complaints, preventing retaliation against complainants, and enhancing workplace safety through appropriate physical security measures such as adequate lighting, secure access controls, and CCTV surveillance where necessary. Employers, HR professionals, compliance officers, and management teams are advised to review their existing POSH policies and practices to ensure alignment with the advisory and applicable legal requirements.
